If We Only Had More Like Her: Happy Birthday to a Great Sister

It’s the Summer Solstice, the beginning of a long, hot summer here in Las Vegas. It’s the start of an ugly political battle to determine the fate of healthcare and social programs for many years to come. It’s also my sister’s birthday. She’s a person who embodies what Americans should value: hard work, compassion and ethics. She’s successful, but did not exploit others to get to this elevated echelon. She’s someone with empathy for her fellow man and animals alike.

My sister and I

She derived her inspiration from our mother, a business owner whose positive contributions to the lives of children have been felt for over twenty years. Our mother started a business for us in 1977. (See my post from May 11) My sister, just 15 years later, with a little start up help from mom, has done the same. Except in her case, she has produced an Olympian and World Champion gymnast and countless scholarshipped athletes who enjoyed a free college education. Her eldest daughter will be attending Stanford University on a full-ride scholarship this Fall. Her program donates time and money to helping homeless and abused women and donates time to helping so many autistic children learn more about fitness. Gymcats is a great part of the community which helps build character, confidence and fitness.

Awesome as she is professionally, it’s not all that defines her. A friend to animals, she found their unnecessary slaughtering to be too abhorrent and made a commitment to eating a vegetarian diet. As boring as it is to eat with her, I respect her decision immensely. She has also found a place in her heart and her home for two young boys her and her husband have adopted from Uganda. She has raised two beautiful, charismatic daughters who are equally talented and always provide sufficient stress to keep her grounded.

If you really want to know what kind of person she is, just look at what she supports in the political sphere. She wants equality for all, no death penalty, folks with higher incomes (including herself) having more responsibility to keeping social programs viable with a fair tax code, universal healthcare and ethical conduct for all politicians. She campaigns tirelessly, volunteering for candidates she feels embody these principles. Nevada is very grateful for her work! A staunch political aficionado, she records shows like Up with Chris Hayes to learn from people she knows are intelligent and compassionate, like her.

She is always looking for a better way to do things, always the mediator for problems with the many people in her life. Simply ask any of her employees or students. She’s a terrific boss, coach, administrator, activist and mom. She’s also a great sister and I love her very much. Happy birthday Cassie!!

Letting Children Die for Religious Beliefs

20120614-080258.jpg
What science books will look like soon if the Fundamentalists take over

Don’t let the title fool you. I’m not talking about kids in the crossfires of some holy war between Christians and Jews or Shi’ites and Sunnis. I’m talking about American parents letting their child die needlessly because their beliefs prohibit scientific intervention. I’m talking about unfathomable idiocy, by ignominious zealots that have caused avoidable tragedies.

If you knew how to swim and your child did not, and he or she is drowning, you refuse to jump in and easily save the child, should you be charged with manslaughter? As a parent, I’d say unequivocally YES! Read this account of a child with a simple appendicitis who suffered and died because their parents tried to pray it better. The seventeen year old boy had no medical care and died without any painkillers. The parents were ACQUITTED but now must simply call Child Protective Services if another of their children get sick. Way to go prayer! Parents who believe in mythical, fantastical bullshit over science ought to be relieved of their parental duty. There have been many awful accounts of children dying due to non-intervention because of religion and seldom does a parent receive any real punitive repercussions.

A controversy brews over vaccinations, proven to save billions of lives

Next we move on to another group of anti-science idiots, the “I won’t vaccinate my kids” imbeciles. Lately we’ve had to endure the faux controversy of vaccines causing autism, which has been proven categorically false. Then there are those that choose not to vaccinate via their religious convictions. A conviction by a court of law is really what they need.

Take Massachusetts for example. Between 1996 and 2006 the rate of those seeking exemptions has more than doubled – from 0.24 percent, or 210, in 1996 to 0.60 percent, or 474, in 2006. Funny, who was governor in 2006, at the height of religious exemptions? Governor LDS Bishop Willard Romney, the man who recently failed to correctly identify a doughnut. Perhaps that was unrelated to my point, but funny nonetheless.

Horrid diseases that were eradicated are making a comeback. There are roughly eight afflictions coming back in alarming numbers, some due to lack of vaccinations en masse and others due to lack of, say sex education. Sex ed, another “taboo” subject for the fundamentalist psychos.

There’s a point where religion should stay the hell out of science and medicine. It is where it prevents the application of tried and true medical practices. Period. Anyone violating scientific law based on their “beliefs” is a detriment to society and their voice and vote should be relinquished.

Rotten Apples Who Fell Far From The Tree: Willard and Bush 43

20120610-100552.jpg
Rotten Sons: Reluctant Endorser, Bush 43 and Willard Romney

It seems when a child is born into privilege, more often than not that person turns out selfish, irresponsible and devoid of empathy. Willard Romney and Bush 43 are perfect examples. Although I’m not in complete agreement with their fathers politically, I can see honor and decency in some of their principles. I absolutely can’t say the same for Willard and W.

George H.W. Bush served in the military in World War 2, something Bush 43 avoided conveniently. He was a decorated Navy pilot in the war .
Military service
Service/branch United States Navy
Years of service 1942–1945
Rank Lieutenant (junior grade)
Unit Fast Carrier Task Force
Battles/wars World War II
Awards Distinguished Flying Cross
Air Medal (3)
Presidential Unit Citation
.

A multitude of honors earned in service of his country. He continued his service for years as the director of the CIA from 1976-1977, unfortunately amassing power his colleague Dick Cheney and later his son would abuse for malevolent objectives. As president, he needed to increase taxes to help maintain financial stability, which went against his campaign promise, ‘No New Taxes.’ This lead to his defeat in 1992, with a fairly irresponsible economy that was unstable due to common practices of recent GOP presidencies. However, he didn’t drastically cut taxes to the tune of $1.3 TRILLION dollars like his son, which has been a tremendous factor in the collapse of our economy. The rich have benefitted obscenely while the middle class has virtually turned into the working poor overnight.

George Romney and Son Willard

History repeats itself again with Mittens, another spoiled, ambitious, unprincipled son of a reasonably decent man, George Romney as our GOP candidate for president.

As governor, Romney worked to overhaul the state’s financial and revenue structure, culminating in Michigan’s first state income tax, and greatly expanded the size of state government. Romney was a strong supporter of the American Civil Rights Movement. He briefly represented moderate Republicans against conservative Republican Barry Goldwaterduring the 1964 U.S. presidential election. Romney was a candidate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States in 1968. While initially a front-runner, he proved an ineffective campaigner, and fell behind Richard Nixon in polls. Following a mid-1967 remark that his earlier support for the Vietnam War had been due to a “brainwashing” by U.S. military and diplomatic officials in Vietnam, his campaign faltered even more, and he withdrew from the contest in early 1968. Once elected president, Nixon appointed Romney Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Romney’s ambitious plans for housing production increases for the poor, and for open housing to desegregate suburbs, were modestly successful but often thwarted by Nixon. Romney left the administration at the start of Nixon’s second term in 1973. He admitted the Vietnam war was perpetuated by false means and was an advocate for civil rights! His son Willard protested anyone against the war, yet received 4 consecutive deferments. Unlike his son, George was a man of some principles. We have yet to see what Willard actually stands for.

It seems Mitt was for planned parenthood, gun control, LGBTQ rights, and universal healthcare at one time, but now is against all those ideas. I’d rather not go into his flip-flopping, as that would take up too much time. My point is, two rotten sons of fairly decent men should not ascend to the highest office in the land based on their family and its wealth of connections. Let’s learn from Bush 43 and keep Romney Jr. out of the White House. The Supreme Court will be decimated by this man, the rich will receive another $10 trillion in tax relief and we’ll all be posthumously baptized into the LDS faith, whether we like it or not.

President Obama Makes Kids Gay? Nice One, GOP!

Caiden Cowger20120607-092404.jpg

As expected, President Obama spoke out in favor of gay marriage and the religious nut jobs on the Right went totally apeshit. We now know the level of lunacy they have achieved.

Check out this 14 year old who hosts a conservative (also synonymous with bigoted) Internet radio show. During one of his recent broadcasts, which are syndicated by Spreaker Web Radio, the teen explains how he is “sickened” by watching some of his friends “turn to” homosexuality, which he says the Obama administration encourages.

He claimed in a May 26th broadcast that homosexuality is a belief?? So unbelievably typical of right wing Christian extremists. He is heralded by conservatives for his extremely ignorant and misguided opinions.

As a flip flopping police officer impersonating, spineless political whore, Romney will probably request a photo op with this hate-mongering kid. After all, he’s buddy buddy with Donald Trump and his Birther claims

Hate oozes from the pores of Willard, the GOP and all their minions. This Caiden has been indoctrinated young to carry out their sinister and sadistic agenda.

Child Poverty in US over 23% Only Beat by Romania in West

Poverty hits the youngest in America the hardest

With the continued war on the poor, it seems the kids in this country are getting a beat down. The GOP’s austerity, which has been shown to work very poorly, is targeting the most vulnerable of our society, our children. Essentially creating the “Hunger Games” for America’s children, The Ryan plan, Willard Romney and the Republican party seem to care less. For more on this check out U.S. Poverty Rate only Second to Romania

How Many Reasons Do You Need to NOT Vote for Mitt Romney?

20120524-090036.jpg

I have to give major props to a twitter great @MittRmoney and the group 140 Elect for this list. Because the most effective tools against this candidate are the facts! Here are a few gems.

•Mitt Romney left Massachusetts with a 39% approval rating and 47th out of 50 states in job creation •OneTermGovernor Mitt Romney left MA with 24% higher spending, $501 million in new “fees”, and the highest debt per capita in the country.
•Mitt Romney’s records as Governor are gone. He ordered staff to destroy computer drives after buying them for $100,000.
•Mitt Romney protested in favor of the Vietnam draft then lived in a French palace during the war.
•“One of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping me get elected.” Romney on sons’ military service
•52% of Republicans believe the war in Afghanistan is not worth fighting. @MittRomney is not one of them.
•President @BarackObama leads Mitt Romney in his home state of Massachusetts by over 21%.
•Mitt Romney: “Don’t try to stop the foreclosure process. Let it run its course and hit the bottom”
•Mitt Romney: “If GM and Chrysler get the bailout, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye.”
•Mitt Romney in 2002: “I will preserve and protect a woman’s right to choose, and am dedicated to honoring my word.”
•Mitt Romney on Planned Parenthood: “We’re going to get rid of that.”
•Bishop Romney once threatened to excommunicate a young single mother if she did not give her son up for adoption.
•Mitt Romney touted RomneyCare as a model for national health care reform three times in 2009.
•Romney on bin Laden: “It’s not worth moving heaven and earth, spending billions of dollars just to catch one person.”
•Mitt Romney made millions investing in companies that did business in Iran.
•Mitt Romney’s tax plan gives millionaires an average tax cut of $250,000.
•Mitt Romney’s budget plan would throw 13 million people off of food stamps.
•In 1996, Mitt Romney called the flat tax a “tax cut for fat cats.” Now Romney says “I love a flat tax.”

It’s amazing the two candidates are so close in the polls currently. There really should be no contest between a President Obama with integrity and this man with zero principles or ethics.

A Tribute To My Mother on Her Birthday

Today is my mother’s birthday. She was born during WWII and has seen so many changes, but has always welcomed these evolutions for the better. She is a wonderful mother of 2 daughters, a grandmother of 4 grandchildren and 2 newly adopted Ugandan grandsons, she has always helped my sister and I immensely. Especially me.

What’s also remarkable is how she was on the cutting edge of civil rights and democratic issues since their inception. She worked for John F. Kennedy at the 1960 convention. She was the one to escort Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry S Truman down the aisle at the convention. My mom made phone calls next to Bobby Kennedy on behalf of his brother. She has been a strong Democrat for decades. Always for equal rights for all, she raised us to know right from wrong not by what some church or some god allegedly dictated, but by doing what’s ethical and moral.

My sister and I were exposed to elements of the Jewish and Catholic faiths, my mom being raised Jewish. My mom never was religious. But today, all three of us have found all religion to make little sense, my mom quietly letting us make our decisions, never pushing us one way or another.

My Mom Protesting Wall Street Corruption

She encouraged us to work diligently at our schoolwork and gymnastics. Both my sister and I received full scholarships to college because of her guidance. I did want to give up a few times, but she used the ingenious ploy of presenting a much more unpleasant alternative if I did give up. She financed world travel for us, as she saw the benefits of travel, cultural diversity and education. She started a business from nothing and is still a success today. Neither of my parents grew up wealthy.

Living in Las Vegas today, I know, is quite a change for all of us from our more liberal East Coast roots. She lived in Massachusetts, New York and California, 3 blue states. We have found a way to keep sane in this red state by working together, sharing our views and uniting in our efforts to keep our President in office. Eight years of Bush was pretty tough, but we stuck together. Sometimes we’d just go to see Lewis Black or Bill Maher to reaffirm we weren’t the only ones with sane and humane political views.

My mom still works tirelessly at an age where most people are on blood pressure, heart or other medications she does not need. She works out as much as any 35 year old and eats relatively sensibly, save for the giant birthday cake we’re going to eat later. Happy Birthday Mom! I love you so much.
