Willard’s Olympic-Sized Gaffes Don’t Faze Obama’s Opponents

If you’d like to use an Olympic metaphor to characterize Willard Romney’s three nation world tour, let’s use gymnastics to elucidate the magnitude of his mistakes. If the trip was a floor exercise routine, he fell on all his tumbling passes and stepped out of bounds while dancing around questions. Add a few insults towards dignitaries, foreign cultures and the press and you have a routine trip laden with deductions. From his time in the United Kingdom just prior to the commencement of the London Olympic Games, on to Israel and then finally off to Poland where his trip ended with a media faux pas, this trip failed to demonstrate his readiness on the world stage. Compared with Senator Obama’s triumphant journey to Europe and Asia in the Summer of 2008, the contrast between these two candidates couldn’t be more stark. Willard Romney went to three nations, generally propitious to his foreign agenda to raise massive funds. This diplomatic fiasco found Willard or his staffers insulting someone in every country, on more than one occasion. In 2008, then Senator Obama drew a crowd of 200,000 in Berlin, all very zealous over the prospect of a potential U.S. leader that would no longer act unilaterally. It was a trip essentially gaffe-free. With Willard’s travels, only Rush Limbaugh found the trip to be a resounding success and he’s essentially alone in his opinion. Apparently, many Americans are as delusional and oblivious as the Oxycontin King of the AM Airwaves.

The Windmill Library, Southwest Las Vegas

Knowing all this, I went to the Obama For America (OFA) Southwest Las Vegas office with elevated spirits today. I was ready to go out to wherever I was needed to register voters and recruit potential volunteers to help reelect my president. The office staff sent me to the Windmill Library, a brand new facility paid for by taxpayers, a sort of socialist project actually. White, Asian, Hispanic and Black families alike walked into the library on this drizzly July morning. Security informed me I was not permitted to sit under any covered area and had to remain about twenty-five feet from the entrance. In fact, the moment I arrived with my clipboard, a woman asked angrily if I had a permit. Sensing the hostility, I informed the library staff of my presence. and that was sufficient. There really should be no objection to registering all voters in a democratic society, yet I was immediately treated with suspicion. Perhaps this negative attitude is the result of ALEC’s stated goal of limiting voter participation and Fox News has been the perfect vehicle to deliver this convoluted message.

After securing my seat by the entrance, I tried to follow the script of the Obama campaign and asked passersby if they were Obama supporters. After about the fifth person who nodded in disgust, I encountered a white man of about sixty-five. I asked this gentlemen my question politely and he said, “hell no, I hate that sonofabitch, I hope he dies.” I reluctantly said, ‘have a nice day’ and pressed on. Another elderly white man said, “I hope you’re asking for I.D.” To which I replied, ‘no, because it is not the law in Nevada.’ I quickly amended my ice-breaker to “are you registered to vote?” because it was obvious I wasn’t changing hearts and minds this time. Maybe I could at least get more people involved. For the most part, the effort was fairly unsuccessful, having only registered one new voter and committed three people to vote Democratic. I suppose every vote counts, so it wasn’t for naught.

Organizing for Nevada: Barack Obama 2012

What’s so unusual about those so vehemently opposed to President Obama is their lack of reason and justification for their strong feelings. Namely, most couldn’t explain what about the president they found so disconcerting. I’d say most of these folks drove cars that would indicate they are middle to working class Americans who would suffer greatly if Willard Romney was elected. However, they were positively convinced President Obama just needed to go, but couldn’t really explain why. It’s obvious most of their opinions have been shaped by Fox News, where there’s seldom a hint of truth to any of their “newscasts.”

I will keep this day foremost in my mind if I get too confident. One might think Willard Romney is a terrible “Etch-A-Sketch” candidate who is easily beatable in November, but this isn’t how the low-information voter perceives reality. We must all work hard to combat all the dirty, corporate money that buys unlimited lies in advertising and alleged “news.” It seems the gaffes of this GOP candidate can’t overshadow the negative press which Koch and Adelson cash can buy. Diligence and perseverance are the only way we’ll beat this unprincipled conservative chameleon and I hope you’re all ready for a fight. We have no choice but to defeat Willard this November. Corporations will be the only people and the actual people will become non-unionized, slave labor.

A Racist Double Standard has Infected America Since Obama Took Office

If you believe we’ve overcome centuries of slavery and decades of racial segregation in this country simply by electing President Obama, you are sadly misguided. There are still sickening displays of abysmal tolerance, bigotry and blatant racism to be found.

20120728-125234.jpg
Caldwell, Idaho billboard

This latest insane advertisement is proudly on display in the predominantly Mormon state of Idaho. The city of Caldwell displays this atrocity to further their racist agenda. Feel free to recall when a similar billboard was erected with a comparison to George W. Bush. I certainly cannot. There were a multitude of awful mass shootings towards the end of Bush’s reign of terror and yet none of these sociopaths were compared to Bush or his gun-toting cohort, Dick Cheney. The number of deaths from the Iraq war alone were far greater than reported by the media, but no one in the mainstream media EVER dared to accuse the Bush Administration of having murderous intentions.

Apparently, if the president has thus far been responsible for far fewer deaths but has the audacity to also be black, that’s a totally different story. When a Republican is president, any and every action done on the world stage is considered “defense” and “keeping us safe”. When President Obama tries to withdraw our troops and generally draw down superfluous military conflicts, he is a murderer. It’s a double standard of Herculean proportions. Drone strikes on sworn enemies in pursuit of nuclear arms are murder but attacking an entire country that had nothing whatsoever to do with 9/11 is considered “The War on Terror?”

Let me remind you of this latest barrage of insults made by the entitled Anglo-Saxon candidate representing the right wing Teabaggers and Birthers which reaffirms the GOP’s desire to play the race card whenever possible. It is apparently the red meat their bloodthirsty far right craves for sustenance.  In England, Willard and his entourage claimed a closer connection to the U.K. because, let’s face it folks, they represent the white guy. Besides, Barack Obama just sounds too foreign to be “American.”

A common sight in Red State America: Birther Inspired Hate Billboards

Perhaps you also believe we’ve achieved equal civil rights since the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Jim Crow laws have been deemed illegal and we’d like to think segregation would be positively offensive. Nostalgics don’t despair, Mississippi is still keeping hate alive. A predominantly white Baptist Church in this bastion of tolerance has threatened to fire the pastor of the church if he wed a black couple. This actually happened in 2012.  I’m stunned.

I recently saw a bumper sticker here in Nevada that said “100% Real American.” Coincidentally, the vehicle also had a Ron Paul decal on the same bumper. I find the racially-based motivations of the Republican party in this country disgusting, dangerous and destructive to all the progress we’ve made in the last century. If only the media would expose this blatant double standard that exists when dealing with our first Black President and many of the “minorities” in this country, we might be able to match other Western Democracies for the civil and human rights we are still lacking.

Politically Speaking, Australia Kicks America’s Ass

Another guest blog by Derek Wood, a resident of Sydney, NSW, Australia.  Follow him on twitter @Main_Man.

As a country Australia is very similar to the US.  Both have historical British influences, geographically they are large countries, English is the main language albeit with some idiosyncrasies and, more importantly, both countries have been built on the back of migration and multiculturalism.

Despite this, politically there are a number of differences.  I should point out that Australia’s population of 21.5 million is extremely small when compared to 311 million in the US.  This can obviously make a difference when it comes to political observations and activities. In America, presidential campaigns cost a large amount of money.  Hundreds of millions of dollars are raised by both the Republicans and Democrats.  This, in turn, is used to publicise the policies and candidates of both parties with a view to gaining your vote.  I have often wondered, as have many other westerners, if the money raised through political donations was put into hospitals, schools and other public services then how much better a society America would be.

Australian Prime Minister (& atheist) Julia Gillard and President Obama

Religion seems to play an important part in US politics.  Any potential Presidential candidate has to show that they are a Christian of some description.  This shows them to be God fearing and obviously appeals to the very large religious followings within the country.  Woe betides an atheist or, say, a Hindu who has a desire to become the President.   The Republican Party certainly have the conservative religious voters in their pockets.  Given that America is the land of the free where there seem to be excesses on every New York street corner, it appears strange that the religious vote is so strong.

The gun lobby is extremely powerful in political circles in the US.  I have no idea how many guns are owned by US citizens, or even how many gun clubs there are in America.  I do know, however, it is in the US constitution that a citizen has a right to bear arms to defend themselves, and buying a gun can be a fairly easy experience.   Considering restrictions on gun ownership appears to be akin to political suicide to us outsiders.

One of the most baffling things about US politics is how important it is to have been a Vietnam veteran.  As time passes by this is changing.  John McCain used his Vietnam veteran status to his advantage during the last presidential campaign.  Why is it so important to the average American voter?  It just seems so strange.  Later on, will the words “Gulf War veteran” be used to similar effect? Time will tell.

These are just some of the ingredients that goes into politics US style.  How does this compare to a country like Australia? Hopefully, the following will uncover this.

Australia is situated in the Southern Hemisphere with the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other side.  The capital is Canberra (not Sydney) where Parliament sits.  It is a large country and if you were to drive from Sydney in the east to Perth in the west, it would roughly take 3 days!

Australia has two main parties the Australian Labor Party (think Democrats) and the Liberal/National Party coalition (think Republicans).   Political donations are received through fund raising and also private donations.  All donations over an amount (I think it is $10,000) have to be disclosed.  Advertising is through a few television advertisements and leaflet drops.  All up about $160m was spent during the 2010 election.  Australians also do not like to be bombarded with lots of political information.  It turns them off.  So both parties have to be extremely clever as to what audiences they target and how.

Religion plays little, or no influence in Australian politics.  In fact, to play the religious card would probably lose you votes. Our current Prime Minister is an atheist.  She is unmarried and lives with her partner Tim Mathieson.   Nobody is really fazed by this here.  Also, the finance minister, Penny Wong, is openly gay.  Again, it has not been a hindrance to her political progression.  Generally sexual preferences are accepted by the vast majority.  Just out of interest, the Latter Day Saints religion accounts for 0.3% of all religions Down Under.

This kind of nonsense isn’t permitted in Australia

We do not have a large gun lobby here in Australia. To get a gun is extremely hard and a number of personal checks must be undertaken before a gun licence is granted.  In rural areas and farming communities you will find the odd shotgun or two.  We do not experience the type of gun tragedies like you experience in the US.  It is not part of the Australian psyche, anyway.

Australians served in the Vietnam War and virtually every military action that has occurred over the past 100 plus years.  Yes the veterans were treated badly upon their return like they were in America.  However, to use this as a political tool would never happen.  Australians are generally too laid back and would not pay too much attention if a political candidate had served in Vietnam or elsewhere.

Even though our countries share a number of commonalities, we are different in our approach to the political process.  I am certainly not saying that the Australian way of doing politics is the best way, but just to point out what occurs Down Under.  In truth there probably isn’t an ideal political process anywhere in the world.  However, the one in Australia is vastly different to the American one.

It’s pretty apparent their population is a bit easier to manage, but they have certainly limited the corruption in politics a helluva lot better than we have.  Thanks to Derek for his valuable insight!  (VegasJessie)

The US Presidential Race: A View From Down Under

A Guest Blog by Derek The Australian Blogger

Back in November 2008 the world breathed a huge sigh of relief. The Democrat candidate by the name of Barack Hussein Obama II had emphatically defeated his Republican opponent, John McCain to win the ultimate political prize – President of the United States of America. It was, to the world, as if sanity had been restored after the somewhat calamitous reign of George W Bush.

Obama was a breath of fresh air to us outside of America. He was young by presidential standards, could easily engage the electorate and had a moderate view on world events. Around the world people rejoiced. The great Steam Ship US of A was back on course. However, there was always going to be challenges for the new President. He was the first (part) Afro-American politician to get the top job. Rumours abounded that he was a Muslim, given his name and his father’s background. After all, wouldn’t that be a good way to attack the US – by having a Muslim President? Said the extremists.

Couple this with the fact that under the Dubya reign America had been ravaged by the Global Financial Crisis. Unemployment was high, and the country was falling even deeper in debt. Obama would be the saviour, many thought. However, to turn around the savageness of the recent past was always going to take more than a ‘couple of years’. The Republicans were aware of this and played on Obama’s failings to magically turn the country around quicker than it takes to buy a gun in the local gun store! Personally, I see parallels between Nelson Mandela’s first term as President of South Africa, and that of President Obama. Both had ridiculously high expectations put on them by the media and citizens alike.

20120727-073229.jpg

Fast forward to today, and President Obama is likely to face-off for the White House against Republican Mitt Romney. Will Obama win a second term? Or will Mitt Romney become the 45th President? Now I am not going into Romney’s Mormonism. My friend Jessie has that well and truly covered. What I am going to do is give you a view of what the world, well Australia, thinks of the Presidential Race. Whether you agree or disagree with the following, that’s up to you. However, it might open your eyes to what others are thinking right now.
If I am honest, a large number of Australians are passing more than a cursory glance at the forthcoming Presidential election. Why? Well, after the disaster of the Bush Mk2 reign and its lack of respect and understanding for other countries, we are honestly worried as to what a President Willard Mitt Romney would do. Remember, that Australia is one of America’s closest allies. Australian’s fought side by side with the US in Vietnam, as well as the two Gulf Wars.

20120727-073351.jpg

Australia wants another Obama term. It is imperative for a number of reasons. One, he is respected by a number of leaders around the world, including Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard. A number of Muslim countries have actually embraced him, as have countries in the South East Asia region, our region. Secondly, he is unlikely to go on a wild goose chase and invade a country like Iran. The West is very wary of another unsanctioned sojourn into foreign territory. A third point to keep in mind is that diplomacy is a core component of any Presidency. You have to keep your friends happy. One day you might require a huge favour from them. President Obama is very skilled at diplomacy. As such the world appears to be a safer place.
So how has Mitt Romney fared on the diplomacy stakes? If you had to assess it as an examiner would a test, then it’s a huge fail! Firstly, he misinterpreted the comments of the Australian Foreign Minister, Bob Carr. For those of you that do not know, Bob Carr was Premier (similar to a US Governor) of New South Wales for 10 years. He is extremely intellectual and was a former journalist. Carr’s remarks to Romney was that the US was one budget away from turning the corner. A clear reference that Obama’s policies are working. Mitt, on the other hand, somehow turned this comment on its head and made it seem that overseas investors see America as a ‘dodgy investment’. This did not go down too well here in Australia.
A few days later and Romney was in England, essentially raising money for his presidential campaign. Whilst there he couldn’t help himself, and commented that London was not prepared for the Olympic Games. Now Romney could easily say that he helped ensure that the Winter Games at Salt Lake City a few years ago was a huge success. However, comparing a Winter Olympic games to a Summer Olympic games is like comparing Kabul and Florida as tourist destinations!
Romney’s foot in mouth disease actually did some good for the UK. Despite the Brits being the closest allies of the US, and also having a centre-right government and London Mayor, Romney by speaking without thinking, has united this country and they are now well and truly getting behind the London Olympics. Boris Johnson, the London Mayor certainly let everyone know his view on Romney’s comments. So thank you, Mitt!

These examples, though fairly small, show the pitfalls and dangerous consequences of electing a President who really is out of touch with global events and countries. It takes talent, skill and flexibility to keep your allies happy. These characteristics are sadly missing from the Republican candidate.
Finally, there are other things that the rest of the world find baffling about the US. We find it strange that the gun lobby is so powerful, we are amazed at the power of the religious right, we are staggered at the underlying bigotry that some rural areas have, and confused as to why being a Vietnam veteran is so important in politics. These are the things that confuse and dumbfound us global citizens, especially other western countries. Why they are able to influence US elections to the extent they do is a true mystery to me!

{If Jessie allows, I might expand on these in another blog and then compare them to politics Australian style.}

I find Mr Derek Wood’s commentary refreshing and unique after being bombarded with right-slanted news here in America! I will definitely post more of his thoughts very soon. Follow him on Twitter @Main_Man. He resides in Sydney, NSW. VegasJessie

An Anglo-Saxon, a Hebrew and a Billionaire Plan a War Together in Israel

Willard’s international tour de gaffes has offended Americans and foreigners alike. Joe Biden said his Anglo-Saxon comments (and subsequent Olympics criticisms), “are a disturbing start to a trip designed to demonstrate governor Romney’s readiness to represent the United States on the world’s stage.” Obviously, social skills and consistency are not Willard’s strong points. However, one thing this Anglo-Saxon supremacist has never vacillated in is his desire to bring about the second coming of Jesus (or related Mormon prophet) by way of a global conflict. He can’t wait until he’s the President Pro-Tem of the World to begin negotiations with his pal Bibi Netanyahu in the “Holy Land.” On Saturday, he’s bringing along his handy-dandy, AIPAC-obsessed, war-mongering personal billionaire, Sheldon Adelson to undoubtedly get the ball rolling towards massive military actions against Israel’s enemies. It was first reported by ABC News that Mr. Adelson would be in Jerusalem at the same time as Mr. Romney. The New York Times confirmed his travels through a friend, who did so on the condition of anonymity, and a donor who was also invited on the Israel portion of Mr. Romney’s first foreign trip as the presumptive Republican nominee. Willard, after sufficiently annoying the British, will meet up in the nation he claims shares the same DNA as his Mormon followers, Israel.

Bibi Netanyahu and Willard Romney

It is only natural Willard would want to placate the neo-cons by hanging out with the Israeli P.M. in the land of BYU Jerusalem and be accompanied by a man who could very well finance a war of their choosing, Adelson. These three pro-Zionist men have been very vocal about their desire to increase military strikes against Palestine, Hamas, Hezbollah and of course, Iran. Willard himself has a very perverted version of what he believes are the president’s war-powers. He said, “I can assure you if I’m president, the Iranians will have no question but that I will be willing to take military action if necessary to prevent them from becoming a nuclear threat to the world. I don’t believe at this stage, therefore, if I’m president that we need to have a war powers approval or special authorization for military force. The President has that capacity now.” This is a man who has protested in favor of a pointless war (Vietnam) while avoiding the draft, claiming his Mormon “mission” took precedence over service to his country. Willard always has criticism for the President over his willingness to negotiate with Iran rather than simply attack them. Since he’d be sending poor Americans into battle and not his own sons, war of course is a no-brainer. War can make people very rich. Worst case scenario, the whole effort fails, then we’re all dead and he gets his own planet where he’s a god for all eternity! It’s a win win for Willard.

Sheldon Adelson’s accompaniment on this trip is rather terrifying for two reasons. 1. He’s got unlimited funds to bribe foreign officials to modify their laws and policies to suit his whims (see Macau/Singapore). 2. He’s pretty keen on a war with Tehran and massive campaign donations have Iranian war strings attached. Romney is his bitch now and this trip merges all the forces Adelson deems necessary to start a ridiculously reckless war.

Willard and Sheldon Adelson

If you ask anyone from Israel who is interested in peace and coexisting in a very hostile region, they will tell you Netanyahu is not the guy to do it. Romney’s Israeli buddy is pulling for him to win the White House to further his bellicose objectives. He’s got the support of many Christian and Jewish Zionists in Washington who are just salivating over the idea of a war with Iran. President Obama is more of a pragmatist who behaves more judiciously than his predecessor. Netanyahu knows Willard is easily manipulated to do the bidding of whoever controls the almighty dollar. He has been pushing for a U.S. leader who will support preemptive war and this Anglo-Saxon Mormon is ideal. He’ll do exactly as the conservative Israeli commands. Add a little Adelson into the mix and you can take this potential global catastrophe all the way to the bank.

I certainly hope the media will connect the dots on what this trip really signifies. It is obviously not to show Willard’s readiness on the world stage. It is simply to raise funds and make friends with those who share his common desire for greed, destruction and power. The fact he is in collusion with this Adelson character and the Barclays’ banksters shows just how shady this GOP candidate truly is. Naturally, with the Olympics beginning on Friday, the meeting will be largely unnoticed by the media. There will be reports of any meetings that will take place but no one will ask the question, WHY are they meeting? Unfortunately, we already know the answer.

Sanctioned Lying by Willard and his Church

If your religion is based on the teachings of a polygamous pedophile with a penchant for perfidy like Joseph Smith, you may have a tendency to have a skewed moral compass. Based on the Mormon doctrine itself and its chameleon-like ability to change its rules as it goes, you can easily understand how Willard Romney has blatantly lied and shifted positions more times than a Bangkok hooker. He will metamorphosize into any form that he believes will be advantageous for his political ambitions.

Joseph Smith’s Original Mormon Temple, Kirtland, Ohio

Lying for the Lord refers to the practice of lying to protect the image of and belief in the Mormon religion, a practice which which Mormonism itself fosters in various ways. Joseph Smith began ignoring the laws of the land and justified his actions as sanctioned by god, to further the ambitions of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Polygamy was the most notorious, but Smith also engaged in schemes that were downright illegal. He had a fairly illustrious arrest record where he seemed to be quite comfortable committing fraud.

"It was charged that Joseph Smith was accused and found guilty of parting a local farmer from his money in a less than honest scheme, commonly known as 'money-digging' or 'glass-looking.'

Bishop Romney has professed his devotion to the LDS Church, and claims it’s what formed his core. Watch this video at around fifteen minutes when he gets very defensive about his religious faith during a radio interview. We can see how devout Willard seems to be. Maybe his adherence to such a questionable doctrine may be how he impersonated a state trooper while in college, with uniform and all without feeling any remorse, as far as anyone knows.

Another issue, obviously, is his unwillingness to release his secret tax returns from years preceding 2010-2011. As a matter of fact, even his 2010 returns are considered incomplete, with information about his secret foreign accounts egregiously absent. The Mormon faith seems to revel in its secret rituals and ceremonies, which of course leads many to believe it is a cult. Willard refuses to discuss his religion too publicly, as people still consider it to be a perversion of the Christian faith so many Americans identify themselves with.

This weekend, even more lying occurred following the serendipitous meeting between Mitt and the Australian foreign minister, Bob Carr, in a San Francisco hotel (which was the host of another fundraiser). Willard essentially put words in the man’s mouth that were derogatory of the U.S. economy, comments which Mr. Carr vehemently denies making. In fact, Willard’s first test of foreign policy acumen was downright embarrassing. He was accused of making up comments from the foreign dignitary.

It is also worth noting how Willard’s diabolical campaign staff seem to have a knack for selective editing of President Obama’s words, placing them in the order of their choosing. Claiming the President said one thing about building a business when he was actually referring to the roads and bridges surrounding the business as collective works of society, they made it sound as if he was deriding the business owners as lazy, and not mentioning the teamwork it takes to build infrastructure. He was most certainly not demeaning the efforts of hard-working business entrepreneurs or denigrating the independent spirit of small business owners in general. This was a lie, a lie Willard has repeated often in the last few days. Remember a few months ago when he portrayed President Obama saying something where he was quoting John McCain, but presented it as if it were Obama speaking for himself? It’s simply utter fallacious treachery. Taking cues from his prophet Joe Smith, and with the help of a couple of handy surrogates ready to lie at the drop of a hat like Dan Senor or Eric Fehrnstrom, the half-truths and complete fallacies will flow like the Colorado River after the first snow melt. It’s in the scriptures. Sanctioned lying is permitted to further the end goals of the Mormon cause.

He appears to have a bullying and empathy problem where he is often viewed less than favorably in his high school and college years. Judging by the ease he fabricates lies, this character trait was formed early on in Willard’s life, back when his religion actually taught that non-white people are cursed with dark skin. Demonstrating zero empathy for his fellow citizens, Mitt was protesting the folks who demonstrated against the Vietnam war, only to skip out on service to his country via his choice of completing his Mormon missionary work in France! An act that was hardly patriotic, to say the least. The LDS Church is very interested in keeping itself in the mix in politics, as it always has since its inception. California’s anti-gay marriage legislation, Prop 8, was heavily funded by Bain and the Mormon Church. He claims to tithe 10% of his income to the church and labels it “charity”, but this isn’t really charity at all. He’s spending his questionably attained fortune on financing policies that promote hatred and bigotry, as they are not in keeping with the ever-evolving book of Mormon. At least for now, until the laws change and they will have to once again revise the Good Book.

I believe the Ron Paul folks have put together an outstanding compilation video of Mitt’s Flip Flops if you need any reminder of how many times he’s changed his core beliefs in recent years. As is common with the tenets of his faith, the end justifies the means. As long as a Mormon is in power, it’s not really important how he got there. Just that HE gets into that White House to fulfill the White Horse Prophecy.
