Why Christians (and Thinking Americans) Should Fear a Mormon President

Is this a man we can trust?

If you read the Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of cult, the example given is thus: a Christian theologian can state that, say, the Mormon Church is theologically a cult of Christianity. Funny how I grew up with the notion, as an East Coast girl, that a perfect dictionary definition of a cult were these curious folks known as the Mormons. I truly had no idea what they were all about, but there was an apprehension about their legitimacy as a true “religion” I sensed even before organized religion became utterly preposterous to me. Something is certainly awry with Mormonism Inc. and I’m starting to understand why it is so. Hopefully, America will learn in time of the insidious truths buried deep in this religion/cult to which our GOP nominee is a lifelong devotee. It’s far more relevant than the conservative-owned media would care to admit, and here’s why.

1.) The Mormon Church has a history of sanctioning lying to further the objectives of the church.
In a Mormon Bishop’s account of “Lying for the Lord” he states: “Evidence presented in this essay establishes that when the church image or its leaders needed protection it was and is, okay to fib, deceive, distort, inflate, minimize, exaggerate, prevaricate or lie. You will read quotations by church leaders who admitted that deception is a useful tool to protect the church and its leaders “when they are in a tight spot,” or “to beat the devil at his own game.” They admit engaging in moral gymnastics; that God approves of deception – if it’s done to protect the “Lord’s Church” or “the brethren” as the leaders are called.” The polygamous lifestyle still practiced today in rural Utah, Arizona and Texas, illustrates how deception and misrepresentation of the truth is not just a thing of the past. Secrecy and lying are normal and sanctioned by the “one true word of God,” Mormonism. All practicing Mormons believe in a polygamous afterlife where a man takes as many wives as needed to populate more planets with his progeny.

There is an inherent mistrust of Christians as well. One of the original prophets, Brigham Young, stated: When the light came to me I saw that all the so-called Christian world was groveling in darkness…With a regard to true theology, a more ignorant people never lived than the present so-called Christian world. The Christian world… are heathens as to the knowledge of the salvation of God. (Journal of Discourses 8:199)

2.) Stealing from non-Mormons, cover-ups of murders and total historical omissions of events deemed unpropitious to the LDS Church are common. Reading books like The Apostasy of a High Priest by Park Romney and An American Fraud: One Lawyer’s Case Against Mormonism by Kay Burningham have helped me realize the depths of deception, crime and general malevolence that has been carried out in the name of Mormonism. These books are written by church insiders who would rather face the pain and ostracism of leaving the church and all its social networking than live a life based on a lie. These are two people who were among the faithful but learned far too many negatives to continue in the faith. If you study the history of the Mormon settlements and the pioneers who are so revered today, you’d find atrocities committed along the same lines as the way the native Americans were treated by so many settlers using “Manifest Destiny” as a justification for virtual genocide. However, the Mormons were guilty of murdering not just Native Americans, but “white” non-Mormons as in the Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857 which has been literally sanitized by Utah history books to this day. A gruesome discovery of remains occurred in 1999, but the Mormon Church stifled the news as much as possible to avoid any controversy.

Willard Romney has adopted this same anti-controversial stance as his cult seems to adopt, by changing and “evolving” his beliefs as evidenced by his literal shifting on SO many issues. Park Romney explains: In their quest to cling to the warm and fuzzy feeling of the sweeter moments of their childhood, Mormons go way out of their way to avoid contention. They distance themselves from controversy, when possible, and avoid contributing to it. In this effort, they often overlook what shouldn’t be overlooked, in the name of being forgiving or charitable. They discourage discussion of, and often avoid, controversial issues. The evolution of the concept of Blacks suddenly becoming worthy of the priesthood in 1978 is a prime example of Mormonism “evolving” to accommodate more members and grow their unbelievable wealth from tithings. It seems the patriarchal nature of the religion will always subjugate women to a lower strata on the social scale, omitting them from governing roles.

As far as the acquisition of the vast wealth the Mormons hold (estimated at over $30 billion that we know of), money, property and treasure can be obtained by theft from “Gentiles” and other non-Mormons. In the early twentieth century, Bishop Andrew Cahoon (An American Fraud, chapter 7 pages 154-155) swore in testimony the following doctrine from the original scriptures: “It was considered no crime to take from those who opposed the Church, because they were the enemies of the Kingdom of God.” If you’re wondering about the morality of Willard Romney’s Bain Capital destroying lives, don’t despair. It is acceptable under the guise of the gospel according to Joseph Smith. Willard sleeps just fine at night, knowing the lives he destroyed were not Mormons.

3.) Willard Mitt Romney is first and foremost committed by “blood atonement.” This unwavering oath is cause for concern for any non-Mormon At the time he would have first gone through the temple (age 19 before his mission)—it would have been similar to this person ‘s experience:

The first time I went through the temple was in September 1987. The thing I remember most vividly about that day, besides the naked touching, was the “penalties.” That’s where I was asked to make several blood oaths never to reveal the various signs, tokens and other bizarre things that went on there.
The penalties involved various pantomimes where I had to pass my thumb across my throat, chest and bowels (IIRC) indicating different kinds of suicide while chanting with the rest of the room “rather than do so, I would suffer my life to be taken.” (Short pause after “life” while the slashing motion is made.) That was the moment where I think I stopped caring whether the Mormon church is true or not. I didn’t want to be part of it and felt trapped by my family and partly by these oaths. I didn’t know how serious they were” See exmormon.com

That is blood atonement –that there are some sins which are just too egregious (here revealing temple secrets) that Christ’s sacrifice will not be enough and man must die for this particular type of sin.

This is a little bit confusing because another oath, the oath of vengeance where the patron would promise to never rest until those who killed Joseph and Hyrum Smith and their descendants were killed, was originally also a part of the early temple ceremony but that was removed in 1927 to the doctrines & covenants of the LDS church. This is paramount over the US Constitution. Any Gentile, Jewish or other American, (especially those without theism) should be aware of this primary oath Willard holds dear.

4.) The Church has a RICH history of bigotry and misogyny. Hate legislation towards any group the church disagrees with is common. As testified by Sue Emmett, the great-great-granddaughter of Brigham Young: “In the Mormon culture, men have all the power in the church….Women do an awful lot of work in the church but they don’t really have any ability to have power positions or to make final decisions.” The makeup of the Utah legislature is quite indicative of both a theocracy and male-domination. Their intolerance of homosexual marriage was evidenced by the millions of dollars the church (and Mitt himself) dumped into funding Proposition 8 legislation in California.

In 2002, James E. Shelledy, editor of the Salt Lake Tribune said this (about Utah government): the fact is, we live in a quasi-theocracy. Eighty percent of office-holders are of a single party (GOP), ninety percent of a single religion (LDS), ninety-nine percent of a single race (Caucasian) and eighty-five percent of one gender (male). If you think Romney will run his government and cabinet any differently, you underestimate the role of the LDS Church on Willard’s psyche.

In conclusion….
In an article entitled: Mitt’s Soul isn’t Muffled, it’s Missing, Kay Burningham notes the close ties the LDS church has with Romney and the reluctance of key Mormon players to bring this alliance to the forefront of America’s minds. A grassroots support of his 2008 presidential campaign was initially begun in 2006 by LDS leaders and BYU groups across the nation. A theocracy remains in Utah. Recently, LDS leaders canceled their annual meeting with the Utah State Legislature, before the January Session began. This is something they had previously done for years. The Utah State Congress is over 80% Mormon. But there was concern about how this regular (LDS) pre-session meeting would be interpreted, now that Romney’s running has brought a more national focus on the religion. One congressman commented: “It seemed odd, because there has always been” a pre-session meeting, said House Speaker Becky Lockhart, R-Provo.” The chance that a Romney presidency would be greatly influenced by the Mormon hierarchy is more than remote; despite Romney’s denial of such an influence, it is entirely likely.

I believe it’s high time we look very seriously into this cult and what the man who would be the first Mormon President of the United States truly believes. President Obama’s faith has been under the microscope since day one. Why should Willard, the racist, misogynist Birther be exempt from similar scrutiny?

Fulfilling Joseph Smith’s White Horse Prophecy: Willard Romney

24 Jun

George Washington and the founding fathers were incredibly insightful because they did not want the United States to be a sectarian nation. They firmly believed if we favor one particular religion, ANY religion, over another, we’ll end up dividing, rather than uniting the nation. The government is not barred from acknowledging faith, however. It has crept into ceremonies like swearing into office in the form of “so help you God”. As inevitable as it is, the founders felt we must be careful and considerate by making religion as unobtrusive as possible.

I doubt if any of you non-Mormons would consider baptizing every single Holocaust victim posthumously into the LDS faith as careful or considerate. This has outraged many in the Jewish community. I watched a brilliant report of this atrocity on a BBC report entitled, The Mormon President. Mitt Romney is not the first Mormon to run for president. Joseph Smith tried in 1844, with little success. But the principles and visions for his vision of a Mormon Planet have changed very little. The comparisons between Romney and Smith are startling. In fact something Joseph Smith said about the abolition of slavery kind of hit a nerve about the two men. He said, “leave it up to the states.” That sounds a lot like Willard’s philosophies on healthcare, immigration and education. Joseph Smith had a newspaper’s printing facilities incinerated for reporting negative news about his polygamy, while Mitt Romney paid $100,000 to wipe his records clean after leaving the Massachusetts Governor post. Very secretive and very suspicious if you ask me.

Have you noticed how the Press has literally ignored his Mormon faith? It is, in his words, what has molded his character, what motivates him in life. It is the most secretive, bizarre religion I’ve heard of, surpassing Scientology in my opinion, and it is never EVEN mentioned on the news. I guess we’re trying to keep the focus on how bad the Obama economy is supposed to be. Mitt must be thinking, “so you governors in Ohio, Indiana and Florida please, please keep your pie holes shut about the goddamned economy. You’re making me look bad. I’m going to head up to my super-mega retreat in Park City, Utah and be with my rich, white, Republican buddies. I have no time to be hobnobbing with you average scrubs with your pesky ethnicity and concern for the poor. I want to distract these “gentiles” who hold all the power and all the cash and use it to catapult me into my dream scenario: President Pro-Tem of the entire World.” This is the The White Horse Prophecy. It is the fulfillment of years of professionally campaigning for the presidency.

You will stop talking about positive job growth, it’s killing my strategy!

He believes he is going to be supreme leader of all men, Mormons and Gentiles alike, the gentiles being anyone who’s non-Mormon. They will eventually see the error of their ways or be submissive before the Mormon superior master race. As a matter of fact, Mitt Romney has based his life and philosophy of governing as parallel to the Mormon Church and it’s founder, Joseph Smith. He is actually mirroring the campaign Smith launched in 1844 for the Presidency. There is a fine documentary of The First Mormon to Run for President written by Adam Christing. He’s a man who wears many hats: comedian, director, pastor, actor and Mormon. He knows what he is speaking about, and he does it quite well.

Romney has taken a secret oath pledging his loyalty first and foremost to his church: “There are, still today, very secret ceremonies in the Mormon temple, which Romney has participated in — virtually all of those, including something called the Oath of Consecration, where he consecrates his money, his time, his talents. His whole life, really. Here is the Oath of Consecration: “You and each of you covenant and promise before God, angels, and these witnesses at this altar, that you do accept the law of consecration as contained in this, The Book of Doctrine and Covenants, in that you do consecrate yourselves, your time, talents, and everything with which the Lord has blessed you, or with which he may bless you, to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for the building up of the kingdom of God on the earth and for the establishment of Zion.” So here’s the main problem: It’s a commitment to the Mormon church, not god or his country. In fact, Mitt has used the church to further his interests on same-sex marriage. He has directly involved politics and his church. He’ll do it again, no doubt.

Mormons have a sense of superiority. They’re downright secretive. A non-Mormon isn’t even allowed in the Mormon Temple. Look at how Willard is conducting this weekend’s Park City “retreat”, a word rife with religious connotations (it should be called just a simple summit). With Willard, you can be assured, “god” will enter into the discussion. The liberals and godless heathens must be defeated. After all, he’s a descendant of Mormon royalty, a founding father if you will. He has a sense of entitlement to carry on the LDS legacy Joseph Smith has put forth back in the early to mid 1800′s. But this is a man more interested in the almighty dollar. He was named after a very rich man, J. Willard Marriott, a Mormon of substantial wealth. He was praised to the hilt for his “salvation” of the 2002 Winter Olympics in, of course, Salt Lake City. I’ve never heard a single word about the ongoing scandals that still exist from the SLC Olympics. It was these Olympics, filled with bribery, that catapulted Willard into the governorship of Massachusetts, a state, frankly, that didn’t care much for his brand of governance.

Shmoozing with his friends in Park City, strategizing on how to rid this nation of President Obama

There’s no question the Romneys are the original pioneers of the Mormon Faith. The journey from England to Illinois was the one taken by Mitt Romney’s great-great-great grandfather, Miles Romney, along with his wife, Elizabeth, from the poor factory town of Preston, England, to Illinois. Miles, an architect, was tasked with assisting the construction of the Nauvoo Temple. Romney’s Mormon roots are very undeniable. However when all went down and Joseph Smith was assassinated, Brigham Young took a group of polygamist supporters who followed the prophet to the promised land of Utah, while Joseph Smith’s widow, Edie Smith remained with a largely monogamist followers and started a non-polygamous group of Mormons in the Midwest. The Romneys chose to go with the Polygamists to Utah. But, Willard’s been spinning the lie , “I’m only for monogamous marriage and wouldn’t have it any other way.” But it was his grandfather, his very own grandfather who had FIVE wives. The current Mormon Scripture doesn’t really shun or ban polygamy, it actually celebrates it posthumously, as Willard’s dead gramps has 14 wives now, 14 women to enjoy celestially in perpetuity. So polygamy is perfectly acceptable, but LGBT Mormons (yes, they exist) are not allowed to marry? I guess the Book of Mormon, written by a convicted criminal and pedophile, knows best.

As far as being prepared for a nuclear holocaust, Mormons have been obsessed with disaster preparedness in awaiting End of Days scenarios. They encourage members to have a a huge stash of food, clothing, ammo and protective clothing for nuclear disasters. This is not something us Atheists think about. We believe our leaders will have the foresight to avoid major wars, not start them over some holy argument or religious dogma. If you believe in posthumous celestial bliss, living eternally on your own planet where you are the “God”, why bother making this life better for everyone? Let’s keep cutting aid to poor, non-deserving “Gentiles”. Why not do your part ending this world filled with non-believers and heathens who are not “pure” and let’s get on with it already? This thought makes this man’s ideas about religion and politics quite terrifying. Willard is not what the founding fathers had in mind over two-hundred years ago, and he certainly is not any more acceptable today. The United States WILL become a theocratic plutocracy. The GOP has already started the ball rolling. Willard will complete the journey.

Attacking A Candidate’s Religion: Suddenly “Out of Bounds?”

I remember the Reverend Jeremiah Wright controversy. The focus on then candidate Obama’s Christian faith was scrutinized like no other. His funny name, religion and love of America was in question. It’s still the subject of countless right wing hate-mongers everywhere.

Then we have George Romney, Willard’s dad. Born on a polygamist compound in Mexico, he ran for president in 1968, his birth certificate and American-ness never coming into question. His family was forced to flee to Mexico to continue to practice their polygamist ways. Grandpa Miles Romney was a man who believes marriage should be between a man and a woman…and a woman…and a woman (5 women actually). Since polygamy is now outlawed, but still practiced in Arizona and Utah (Red States), the Mormons of today have been forced to denounce it, regardless of what their religion has led them to believe. Celestial Marriage, a tenet of the Mormon faith, means only those sealed by the Mormon temple can be married in heaven and thus have eternal sex. If they have more than one wife on Earth, (by widowing for example) they can enjoy a polygamist eternal existence in heaven. Non-Mormons are not able to do this, as they are undoubtedly unworthy. Neat, huh?

For some reason, I believe it may be his integrity, President Obama said the candidate’s religion is off limits. Governor Brian Schweitzer, (D) Montana, said his polygamist roots could hurt him . According to a survey, 86% of women are not in favor of polygamy.

But Willard has spoken out against another form of monogamy. Gay marriage, apparently, is SO egregious, we need a Constitutional Amendment to prevent it from destroying the institution of marriage for straight Americans. Maybe he’d be in favor of plural gay marriage? (that’s sarcasm). But he went even further in his religiously motivated intolerance.

First he said, in 1994, he’d be more liberal than Ted Kennedy on gay rights issues. Fast forward to last week. He said he’s in favor of gay couples having adoption rights. Then less than 24 hours later, he flip flops on gay adoption. Anytime a child can be loved by a family, regardless of its makeup, it should be WELCOMED! This is just another mean boy moment.

I can just imagine the unraveling of Governor Romney if a reporter asked a real question on his faith and its history on non-traditional marriage and racism.
Watch as Mitt becomes defensive and flustered as a reporter catches him in a blatant lie regarding a campaign staffer/lobbyist. Notice Eric Fehrnstrom coming to his master’s defense? I eagerly await the day a reporter asks him this: ‘How come up until you were 31, you knew of the LDS church’s position discriminating against African Americans in your church, you never spoke out against it?’ I hope the cameras are rolling if this ever happens! But I’m not holding my breath. The white candidate doesn’t get the tough questions.

Romney’s Mormon Religion: A History of Flip-Flopping

As one who finds any organized religion unpalatable, it’s always been fascinating to me why people believe the tall tales they hold sacred. Primarily, the presumptive GOP nominee, Willard Mitt Romney proves very enigmatic as far as his beliefs are concerned. He is a member of the Mormon Church (Latter Day Saints or LDS). In fact, his family is considered LDS Royalty. I’ve already listed his numerous flip flops in my previous post, but has his religion also behaved like a serial flip-flopper as well? YES! It definitely has shape shifted to keep it from extinction. I suppose other religions are guilty of this too, but hey, let’s stick to this religion for now.
Aside from Joseph Smith’s use of sixteenth century English to write the Book of Mormon in the nineteenth century, a few other idiosyncrasies can be noted in the religion. The issue of polygamy comes to mind first and foremost. Although polygamy was outlawed in 1862 in the United States, it wasn’t until 1890 the Mormon Church declared it illegal. Brigham Young, the second president of the church, once stated: “The only men who become Gods, even the Sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy” (Journal of Discourses, vol. 11, p. 269). Of course Willard’s family fled the US when the practice was outlawed in the 19th century. See the Romney’s flee to Mexico

Another practice the church supported was institutionalized racism. Romney, a bishop in the church, was 31 years old when the ban against African Americans was lifted. I certainly consider this a problem. Video: Mitt Romney’s Mormon Problem If church doctrine can be changed and has been changed, why did it take so long? Was the Mark of Cain too hard to shed for Black church members? Even Christianity in Confederate states changed their racial discriminatory practices before the LDS church.

Steve Benson, the grandson of former “prophet” (a.k.a. Head of the Mormon Church) Ezra Taft Benson has been openly critical of the faith. He is a regular contributor of ExMormon.com He has obviously parted ways with the Mormon Church, and has been outspoken on why he chose to leave. He is a cartoonist and editorialist for the Arizona Republic. A great post which explains his rationale is Ground Zero:The Point Where I Quit Weating Garments and Stopped Paying Tithing

Mormons also believe Native Americans are direct descendants of the Lamanites. This has proven to be false and refuted by DNA evidence. These changes are seen by some critics to be another step in the evolution of the text of the Book of Mormon to delete racist language from it. (See changes to text in aforementioned Lamanites link).
I’ve also come to learn some of the sealing ceremony has been changed over the years, in the interest of becoming less, shall we say, weird. That’s another post altogether.

If the Republican Party won’t question their nominee on his very devout, religious convictions and how they will influence policy, I feel the rest of us sane folks have to do it. I urge my fellow bloggers and journalists out there to please, please open up the can of worms the GOP is trying to keep the lid on.
