A Racist Double Standard has Infected America Since Obama Took Office

28 Jul

If you believe we’ve overcome centuries of slavery and decades of racial segregation in this country simply by electing President Obama, you are sadly misguided. There are still sickening displays of abysmal tolerance, bigotry and blatant racism to be found.

Caldwell, Idaho billboard

This latest insane advertisement is proudly on display in the predominantly Mormon state of Idaho. The city of Caldwell displays this atrocity to further their racist agenda. Feel free to recall when a similar billboard was erected with a comparison to George W. Bush. I certainly cannot. There were a multitude of awful mass shootings towards the end of Bush’s reign of terror and yet none of these sociopaths were compared to Bush or his gun-toting cohort, Dick Cheney. The number of deaths from the Iraq war alone were far greater than reported by the media, but no one in the mainstream media EVER dared to accuse the Bush Administration of having murderous intentions.

Apparently, if the president has thus far been responsible for far fewer deaths but has the audacity to also be black, that’s a totally different story. When a Republican is president, any and every action done on the world stage is considered “defense” and “keeping us safe”. When President Obama tries to withdraw our troops and generally draw down superfluous military conflicts, he is a murderer. It’s a double standard of Herculean proportions. Drone strikes on sworn enemies in pursuit of nuclear arms are murder but attacking an entire country that had nothing whatsoever to do with 9/11 is considered “The War on Terror?”

Let me remind you of this latest barrage of insults made by the entitled Anglo-Saxon candidate representing the right wing Teabaggers and Birthers which reaffirms the GOP’s desire to play the race card whenever possible. It is apparently the red meat their bloodthirsty far right craves for sustenance.  In England, Willard and his entourage claimed a closer connection to the U.K. because, let’s face it folks, they represent the white guy. Besides, Barack Obama just sounds too foreign to be “American.”

A common sight in Red State America: Birther Inspired Hate Billboards

Perhaps you also believe we’ve achieved equal civil rights since the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Jim Crow laws have been deemed illegal and we’d like to think segregation would be positively offensive. Nostalgics don’t despair, Mississippi is still keeping hate alive. A predominantly white Baptist Church in this bastion of tolerance has threatened to fire the pastor of the church if he wed a black couple. This actually happened in 2012.  I’m stunned.

I recently saw a bumper sticker here in Nevada that said “100% Real American.” Coincidentally, the vehicle also had a Ron Paul decal on the same bumper. I find the racially-based motivations of the Republican party in this country disgusting, dangerous and destructive to all the progress we’ve made in the last century. If only the media would expose this blatant double standard that exists when dealing with our first Black President and many of the “minorities” in this country, we might be able to match other Western Democracies for the civil and human rights we are still lacking.

How to Leave The Mormon Church: Apostasy, Disgrace or Suicide

2 Jul

It was quite a rare spectacle. On Saturday, June 30th in Salt Lake City, Utah 150 Mormons quit their church in a mass resignation ceremony. It seems to be happening more and people are becoming quite interested in the waves of resignation from the Mormon Church on the basis of increasing awareness of its fraud and manipulation.

A Mass Exodus from Mormonism, June 30, 2012

This is far from the norm in a religion where the the removal of a person’s name from Church membership cancels the effects of baptism and confirmation, withdraws the priesthood held by a male member, and revokes temple blessings. One can only return once to the faith. A second time, it’s for good. It is something not to be taken lightly. Certainly it’s not the spiritual equivalent of giving up soda. A former Bishop has even told me,” this stuff runs deep, deeper that most non-members realize.” The indoctrination for many unfortunates starts young and requires a devoted mind which must divest itself partially of reason and start to accept a bunch of incredulous tall tales as absolute truths. Not too easy.

The Mormons have a history of intolerance towards outsiders or even those unwilling to be indoctrinated into this “cult” as it’s referred to by universally all ex-Mormons. Some of the behavior reared its ugly head early on in Mormon history. An atrocity occurred when a caravan of pioneers, fleeing famine and pursuing a life out west, had the misfortune of passing through the Utah Territories in 1857.

It was actually September 11th that year when the Mountain Meadows Massacre took place. Sources estimate that between 120 and 140 men, women and children were killed at Mountain Meadows, a rest stop on the Old Spanish Trail, in the Utah Territory. A small group of children, thought to be too young to inform on the perpetrators, was spared and taken in by Mormon families in Southern Utah. The Utah Territorial Militia was responsible for the atrocities. Scholars still debate whether senior Mormon leadership, including Brigham Young, directly instigated the massacre or if responsibility lies with the local leaders of southern Utah. Suspicion or dissent is not tolerated in the church. Generally, Mormons do not look propitiously upon anyone who does not unconditionally accept the doctrine of a philandering charlatan named Joseph Smith.

Two states are considered predominately Mormon, Utah and Idaho. I’ve driven through both states and perhaps erroneously, I felt like an outsider. It was definitely not the same feeling as other states I’ve driven through, even small town, weird Nevada feels more welcoming. In Utah and Idaho, many of fhe kids are raised in fear of the church, it rules every facet of their lives. They are forced to wake up at ungodly hours to attend seminary before they begin high school every day.

High School/College and Mormon Seminary go hand in hand in Pocatello, Idaho. One even gets its own traffic light.

The religion doesn’t tolerate deviance. You can just imagine the angst a teenager who may be gay must feel being something the church simply forbids. Suicide is coincidentally high in both states. The Idaho Council on Suicide Prevention notes that Idaho has the 4th highest suicide rate in the U.S. In Utah, a state where around 70% of the population is LDS, the suicide rate for youth (especially in “Mormon suburbs” as some call them) is unbelievably high, approximately twice the national average. This is for both teenage boys and girls in Utah .

Women are of course discriminated against in this male-dominated cult. Therefore, they are taking approximately 65% more anti-depressant medication per capita, compared to other American women. Utah also leads the nation in bankruptcies and consumption of internet pornography per capita. None of this is never addressed publicly by church leaders, or even acknowledged.

The Mormons control many aspects of life in small towns in both states. If you are even thinking of leaving the church, hundreds have tales of ostracism and shunning for you which you may want to hear first. An ex-Mormon friend confided this in me: “When some of my member friends found out that I was leaving the church, you would think I had contracted leprosy. People who before would have told you that they were my best friends suddenly disappeared. One asked me what sin it was that I wanted to commit so badly that I felt I needed to leave the church!”

One of the more famous “apostates” is even a relation of Willard Romney, Mormon royalty. Park Romney, Willard’s second cousin, who has written a riveting account of his journey away from the faith. The Apostasy of a High Priest is certainly not part of the Romney campaign’s required reading list, but it’s full of fantastic reasons why this religion is completely insane. It is very hard to understand how very intelligent people can

Park Romney, Ex-Mormon & Mitt Romney, Mormon Royalty

compartmentalize science and reason in one part of their brain and throw logic to the wind in another lobe. With the Mormon faith, you are apparently so brainwashed, you can be a brilliant scientist on the one hand and then honestly believe it’s ok for a people to have permitted local leaders to push, trick, even threaten men into surrendering their wife or girlfriend to polygamy as another real belief. I find it amazing how many of these people are very educated and still hold fast to these beliefs. It’s really astonishing what the human mind can convince itself is factual.

But those who leave, as both my sources have, feel amazed they actually fell for that nonsense and chicanery. It’s almost as if they have been declared dead in their Mormon world. Mormon leaders claim this is not true, but it happens EVERY time someone chooses to step out. Ostracized doesn’t even begin to describe the alienation. This is why those brave souls who professed their independence from the religion must be welcomed by their non-Mormon friends.

I wish there was more we can do for the unhappy, especially the forlorn Lost Boys of Polygamy, among other LDS skeptics. There actually IS hope and life after leaving the Mormon Church. There are many great people who have done so for many valid reasons. I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface on the myriad of other fallacies the LDS faith contains, which is quite incredulous, but I don’t plan to even discuss all the dogmatic errors inherent in the doctrine. I simply am amazed at the statistics regarding the people of the faith. The facts don’t lie. There is trouble in Mormon Paradise.

Stuck in Teabagging Idaho: HELP!

It’s a state where Blacks own 0.2% of all businesses. Hispanics own 2.6%. The population is 84% White. But that’s not really news, we’d expect these demographics from a state where Larry Craig once graced the U.S. Senate with his presence. It’s a state where taxes are “bad” but farm subsidies are fine. This is predictable rhetoric from Idaho. But really, what’s it like to live there?

It’s common to see controversial religious proclamations like this as mainstream

This is at this Catholic school where subtlety is certainly not their strong suit

But don’t worry. They’re on Facebook and the banner does say “all are welcome.” They must be pretty tolerant and have a modern perspective, right?

Hardly. The Central Idaho Post, a free paper in Grangeville, Idaho has “In God We Trust” right at the top of their front page, so we’ve already eliminated all those pesky atheists. Phew. Their right-wing views are presented as fact. The Post’s political position is made very clear by the use of the terms “constitution-hating liberals,” Sharia Law or the assertion unions have outlived their usefulness (see below.) With the Sharia Law comments, I suppose anyone affiliated with Islam isn’t welcome either. Occupy Wall Street is clearly a Communist Movement. Grangeville is the Tea Party version of heaven on Earth. Here’s a page two “editorial” from one of the paper’s freelance journalists:

Central Idaho Post

That’s a small sample of the newspaper my father-in-law must look at to get his local news. He is an outdoorsman, a lover of nature and a hunter, like most rural Idahoans. He was once a prominent businessman and leader in town. However, he’s not a Teabagger, a hate-monger or a Republican. He’s a rare breed. He’s incredibly well-read and a LIBERAL! (gasp!!) As a resident of Grangeville for over 20 years, he’s gradually become accustomed to keeping his distance from local narrow-minded political affairs. The crazy in Grangeville has gotten worse by the year. Liberals are obviously a minority in a state where only 22.6% of its residents are college graduates. (Traditionally, education is not the strong suit of most suspicious, hate-mongering Republicans.) He knows there’s no point engaging in any sort of meaningful dialogue. Their minds are made up. That damned Socialist Muslim in the White House is ruining our America! It’s as if they are living in the early nineteenth century, a time when women knew their place and slavery was the law of the land.

A common editorial figure in the Central Idaho Post is Douglas V. Gibbs, self-proclaimed “Constitutional Defender.” Here’s an excerpt from his writings: Leftists refuse to accept the true nature of Islamism, which is more like Nazism or Communism, than a religion of peace. The enemy will not be content to beat us down on our own soil, and take over a certain amount of turf. The Islamists will come after us with vengeance as they have pledged time and time again….As the liberal left spreads its politically correct doctrine to the detriment of this nation, we are bending over backwards to accommodate our enemy’s counterparts here in the United States. He uses the term “Democrat Congress” as often as possible. That’s apparently a Teabagger insult towards anyone who’s to the left of their corporate fascist way of thinking. He also fails to mention that President Obama took down Osama Bin Laden, not George W. Bush.

It’s no wonder my father-in-law is looking to move to another state, preferably Oregon, a far more Blue state. Idaho has some of the most beautiful scenery and enjoys natural serenity unparalleled anywhere in the nation. However, the vitriolic rhetoric spewed by the mainstream in its most rural areas is far from peaceful. It’s downright terrifying.

Post election 2012: One Idaho lawmaker is vying for states to disregard the electoral college and as of November 27th is still pulling for a Romney victory. Idaho has much evolving to do!
