Dangerous Fundamentalism: The Taliban and the American Tealiban

Irony can be defined by the incongruity which occurs when actions of a group mirror the behavior of a people whom they fear and despise most. Following the 9-11 tragedy, our united front was focused mainly on eliminating the terror breeding grounds established by Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. The Taliban imposed a form of government that was unacceptable and offensive to most Americans. Absence of democratic process, equality, Islamic law and the utter subjugation of women in their culture were the antithesis of what we deemed a free society. Their total domination of media, organized rebellion against a government they considered tyrannical and Islamic ideological purity seemed so unpalatable to the Christian crusaders of the mighty USA and the George W. Bush military machine.

Yet, as the Republican Party slides down the slippery slope towards Old Testament principles, the Conservative movement mirrors the Taliban more than they realize. The Teaparty can often be referred to as the Tealiban

The dangerous policies and religious doctrinal mandates are far more similar than either group would willfully acknowledge. In the areas of vaccination and vital medical care, religious denial of science and the subjugation of women and the proclivity towards a culture obsessed with guns, American Fundamentalists and Taliban Extremists are hardly discernible.

The Koran and the Old Testament treat women as sinful creatures by nature. The image of Eve as temptress in the Bible has resulted in an extremely negative impact on women throughout the Judaeo-Christian tradition. All women were believed to have inherited from their mother, the Biblical Eve, both her guilt and her guile. The Koran has many quotes such as this Al-Tirmidhi 3272 – “When Allah’s Messenger was asked which woman was best he replied, ‘The one who pleases (her husband) when he looks at her, obeys him when he gives a command, and does not go against his wishes regarding her person or property by doing anything of which he disapproves’.”

In the eyes of the Draconian religious zealots, women are simply vehicles for reproduction, and should only provide enjoyment and servitude for men. The unbelievably chauvinistic and restrictive fundamentalist laws of both the Taliban and the disregard for equal protection for American women by Judicial Magistrates are becoming hard to decipher.

The American Fundamentalists are very much against science and medical progress much like the Islamic government of Afghanistan. Recently, a Pennsylvanian couple who believe in the power of prayer over medical care lost their second child by eschewing medical attention. States like Washington and Oregon are seeing a resurgence in Pertussis due to a fundamentalist-driven hysteria against vaccines. The fallacy of autism being caused by vaccines plus the unwillingness to interfere with god’s plan are beyond dangerous and should never be acceptable in modern America.

Because women are simply unclean and sinful beings, they have far less protection than men in Taliban society. Laws regarding the healthcare and well-being of Afghan women are so restrictive, they suffer much higher mortality rates due to pregnancy and childbirth. In Afghanistan, perhaps the only thing more dangerous than being a woman is being a pregnant woman in need of medical care. A 2002 survey counted 1,600 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. The cause of death was most often hemorrhaging or obstructed delivery, both preventable if skilled health care is available.

To make matters worse, foreign aid administrators, who provide vital vaccinations are treated with suspicion and unwarranted violence by the Taliban. Ten foreign medical workers were murdered because they were believed to be spies, while simply trying to administer polio vaccines to the very poor. Americans simply choosing to ignore the proven scientific benefits of vaccines and willfully putting their children and others at risk is certainly a step in the wrong direction as well. If vaccines and science are viewed as suspicious and interfering with “god’s will,” society is well on its way to massive medieval medical malpractice.

The American leaders of megachurches and fundamentalist sects often rally against their perceived threat of a tyrannical government by encouraging more gun ownership within their congregations. “Blessed are the Peacemakers? Absolutely. Make mine a .45 Colt with a 5 1/2 inch barrel.” This comment and many like it have been commonly overheard in sermons all over the Bible Belt where guns and god go hand and hand. The Taliban often sacrifices children by using their religion to justify violence.

I’ll just say it in plain English. Most of all the world’s plight of inequality, violence and atrocities committed against humanity are attributed to RELIGION. The societies who enjoy the highest standards of living and happiness are the LEAST RELIGIOUS. As a country founded upon the principles of separation of church and state, one of the most important steps to averting misery in this country is to stop kowtowing to the demands of fundamentalist insanity and stop the madness of Biblical thought that so greatly resembles those who we are fighting against halfway across the world.

Discrimination, Abuse and Misogyny in the Name of God

16 Jul

Since at least 1980, the United States has been dominated by a political coalition in which conservative evangelical Christians have shaped government to reflect their beliefs. Simply check out the Senators in the “Family” Fellowship. In a few western states such as Utah, the Mormons have greatly influenced culture and society to a degree far greater than mere spirituality. These non-secular regulations are taking some communities so far backwards, you’d hardly believe these laws are still on the books in 2012. The predominance of religion in law can lend credence to a few medieval practices.

There have been confirmed instances of fatalities caused by spanking a child, all in the name of the Evangelical Christian God. More recently, a Georgia couple used a shock collar to keep their fifteen year old in line while keeping her locked in a chicken coup, sometimes not feeding her for days. They claimed they were only “doing what the Bible says”, to keep her from misbehaving.

It seems children as well as women are often the victims of religiously sanctioned abuse. Take this Bible verse from Corinthians: (I Cor. 14:34, 35 ) “Let the women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as also saith the law. And if they would learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home: for it is shameful for a woman to speak in the church.” It’s no wonder the war on women is so popular amongst the more religious conservatives in our political system. They often base their laws on biblical traditions, even though our Constitution mandates a separation of church and state.

As you can imagine, Red States are more fundamentalist and their laws mirror their religious fervor. For instance, in Tennessee, it is illegal for a woman to call a man for a date. In Alabama, a highly religiously populated state, incestuous marriages are legal. In Memphis, it is illegal for a woman to drive a car unless there is a man either running or walking in front of it, waving a red flag to warn approaching motorists and pedestrians. Not the least bit sexist. Sounds a bit like Saudi Arabia, doesn’t it?

FLDS Polygamist Mormons

Utah is the hands down champion of antediluvian laws and practices. The city of St. George has a law on the books where public dancing at an establishment serving alcohol is strictly forbidden. If you go to an Applebee’s in this Southern Utah city, you can only order a beer if it’s accompanied by a food order as well. Southern Utah is notorious for the Fundamentalist sect of the LDS religion. Polygamy is practiced openly and the laws reflect the rigid views on women both in the fundamentalist south and the northern part of the state.

Here are a few laws still on the books in Utah:

A husband is responsible for every criminal act committed by his wife while she is in his presence.
(Utah law.)

(Logan) Women may not swear.

(Monroe) Daylight must be visible between partners on a dance floor.

(Tremonton) It is illegal to have sex in a moving ambulance and if you are caught the guy is let go and the woman is punished and her name appears in the newspaper.

Utah has very strict laws prohibiting the sale of alcohol on a limited or total basis. There are just 37 state-owned liquor stores in the entire state of Utah, and these are solely where you purchase alcoholic beverages. I suppose the Temperance Movement is still dominant in 2012. Very strange.

Obviously, religion hinders progress in the realm of science. Parents commonly cite religious reasons for not vaccinating children . Thanks to these rocket scientists, formerly eradicated diseases like measles and whooping cough are making a resurgence. Simply look at the African Continent to see how destructive religion can be to a society. Africa is the most evangelized and the most Christian continent on earth. It also has the worst poverty, the worst epidemics and the worst combined economy of any continent on earth, all of which dramatically accelerated following the evangelical invasion.

Teaching intolerance and hate via religion seems to provide the justification for culturally mandated intolerance and abuse. If one doesn’t fall in line with the definitions of proper behavior as established by white, heterosexual males, generally of strong religious conviction, the punishments are severe to say the least. Until we separate our nation’s laws with the laws of religious institutions, America is anything but free. Women and children are usually the most at risk for abuse. Voting out fundamentalist Teabaggers would be a great way to start protecting our most vulnerable Americans.

Letting Children Die for Religious Beliefs

What science books will look like soon if the Fundamentalists take over

Don’t let the title fool you. I’m not talking about kids in the crossfires of some holy war between Christians and Jews or Shi’ites and Sunnis. I’m talking about American parents letting their child die needlessly because their beliefs prohibit scientific intervention. I’m talking about unfathomable idiocy, by ignominious zealots that have caused avoidable tragedies.

If you knew how to swim and your child did not, and he or she is drowning, you refuse to jump in and easily save the child, should you be charged with manslaughter? As a parent, I’d say unequivocally YES! Read this account of a child with a simple appendicitis who suffered and died because their parents tried to pray it better. The seventeen year old boy had no medical care and died without any painkillers. The parents were ACQUITTED but now must simply call Child Protective Services if another of their children get sick. Way to go prayer! Parents who believe in mythical, fantastical bullshit over science ought to be relieved of their parental duty. There have been many awful accounts of children dying due to non-intervention because of religion and seldom does a parent receive any real punitive repercussions.

A controversy brews over vaccinations, proven to save billions of lives

Next we move on to another group of anti-science idiots, the “I won’t vaccinate my kids” imbeciles. Lately we’ve had to endure the faux controversy of vaccines causing autism, which has been proven categorically false. Then there are those that choose not to vaccinate via their religious convictions. A conviction by a court of law is really what they need.

Take Massachusetts for example. Between 1996 and 2006 the rate of those seeking exemptions has more than doubled – from 0.24 percent, or 210, in 1996 to 0.60 percent, or 474, in 2006. Funny, who was governor in 2006, at the height of religious exemptions? Governor LDS Bishop Willard Romney, the man who recently failed to correctly identify a doughnut. Perhaps that was unrelated to my point, but funny nonetheless.

Horrid diseases that were eradicated are making a comeback. There are roughly eight afflictions coming back in alarming numbers, some due to lack of vaccinations en masse and others due to lack of, say sex education. Sex ed, another “taboo” subject for the fundamentalist psychos.

There’s a point where religion should stay the hell out of science and medicine. It is where it prevents the application of tried and true medical practices. Period. Anyone violating scientific law based on their “beliefs” is a detriment to society and their voice and vote should be relinquished.
